A backup is not yet a restore

Many companies back up their data every night and have still never checked whether a system can be brought back from it.

A backup only proves that data was copied. Whether it turns into a running system in an emergency is shown only by a test.

So plan a full restore onto a separate system at least once a year, and measure how long it takes.

  • Which systems have to be running again first?
  • How much data loss is acceptable?
  • Who carries out the restore if the person in charge is away?
